Fauré’s Requiem at St. Bridget
Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem in D minor, Op. 48 is one of the most beloved settings of the Catholic Mass for the Dead, noted for its peaceful and serene approach to the theme of eternal rest. Composed between 1887 and 1890, Fauré’s Requiem stands apart from the dramatic and fearsome tones of other requiem masses. It emphasizes tranquility, solace, and the hope of heaven, reflecting Fauré’s own views on death as “a happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than a painful passing away.”
Fauré’s masterpiece is unique for its omission of the Dies Irae (Day of Wrath) and its inclusion of movements such as the "Pie Jesu" and "In Paradisum," which are often highlighted for their ethereal beauty. The gentle melodies, lush harmonies, and meditative character of the Requiem offer a contemplative space for prayer and remembrance, making it a fitting choice for our Mass of Remembrance for All Souls.
We’re excited to invite you to join us on Wednesday, November 6th at 7pm as we reflect on the promise of eternal peace through this transcendent musical work. The St. Bridget choir will be joined by other local singers and a string orchestra composed of Rowan University students. This work is the cultivation of months of hard work and your attendance will be a powerful testament to the unity of our faith community and a beautiful offering for those who have passed on. In lieu of flowers, we kindly ask that you consider donating to support the music for this Mass.
Thank you!
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.
